“Harry’s Bar is an elegant and informal bar which serves outstanding food as well – a great choice for lunch in Venice,” says Interior Architect Mikael Mammen.
He smiles and adds: “Go there for lunch. It will easily set you back € 350 for two people but you don’t have to pay for pane e coperto, as you do for dinner, which is another € 100.”

Harry’s Bar made Carpaccio Popular
“Harry’s Bar made beef carpaccio popular but I always have their tuna tartare. They serve it deliciously spicy and only if it’s caught the same day” says Mikael Mammen.
Mikael Mammen is equally enthusiastic about the service at Harry’s Bar, and says that the Restaurant Manager has been there – at least – since he visited Harry’s Bar for the first time in 1985.

Avenue Spot: Vietsense

"Mum's cooking is the best," says Huong Vu of the Vietnamese food at her family's restaurant VIETSENSE

When Food is Love
“Mum’s cooking is the best,” smiles owner Huong Vu of her family’s Vietnamese restaurant Vietsense.
“When Food is Love” is their motto as all the food is prepared by the family matriarch with the same passion and love that she puts into the food her family eats.
Huong Vu oversees the floor, and she is the mastermind behind the modern white walls and the atmospheric photos from Vietnamese streetscapes.

Family and friends have helped decorate the walls at VIETSENSE with atmospheric pictures from Vietnamese streetscapes

Fresh Food with Very Little Fat
“Vietnamese food is quite modern,” Huong Vu says, “as it is mostly fresh greens and herbs, and it is very low in fat.”
“If you are new to Vietnamese food you should definitely try the starters,” she enthuses, “that way you get to try a bit of everything.”
Two of the most popular dishes are the Lotus Salad and the Vietnamese spring rolls.
Huong Vu explains: “The spring rolls are based on a secret family recipe which ensures that they absorb very little oil, just enough to make them crisp and tasty.”

The traditional Asian shrine at the entrance door of restaurant VIETSENSE brings luck and entices bypassers to pay the restaurant a visit

Delicious Desserts
Huong Vu recommends the desserts made by her brother-in-law.
“He is of Chinese origin but trained in European cooking, and every week he makes a new delicious dessert. This week it is Mango truffle with coconut cream.”
Possibly not quite as low in fat but definitely made with passion …

Free Welcome Drink
Ask for a business card from Vietsense at the reception at Avenue Hotel.

AVENUE SPOT OF THE MONTH: KIND OF BLUE

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Everything at KIND OF BLUE is designed for your laidback pleasure

When You’re in a Laidback Mood
“Everything here is designed to be laidback,” says owner Claus Ploug of his bar Kind of Blue. The name is inspired by the classic jazz record Kind of Blue by Miles Davis. It defines the mood of the bar, enhanced by the specially designed colour on the walls, and the music chosen by Claus Ploug.

Owner Claus Ploug has selected everything at KIND OF BLUE according to his own taste and definition of quality

“It’s My Ego-trip”
Claus Ploug readily admits that Kind of Blue is his ego-trip. He has selected everything according to his own taste and definition of quality:
The music consists of more than 70 compilations he has mixed himself from his favourite CDs, whether it’s jazz, folk or rock it’s always smooth and laidback.
The decor is either designed especially for Kind of Blue or it’s design classics like the eternally popular Eames shell chairs and the fashionable Jieldé Lamps. The furniture is from Relove, his girlfriend’s show room for vintage furniture, conveniently situated at the back of the bar.
He serves plunger coffee because of the better flavour, and because an espresso machine would make too much noise for the guests to enjoy the music …

The decor at KIND OF BLUE consists of carefully selected design classics like the original Eames shell chairs

Live Music and Events
Check out Claus Ploug’s personal take on the perfect spot for coffee, drinks and music when jazz guitarist Tao Højgaard and friends play live at Kind of Blue during Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2010.

vintage kafferiet – avenue spot of the month

Friday, June 11th, 2010

At Vintage Kafferiet you may enjoy home-baked cakes and coffee while you browse for treasures for your home

“Come by on Saturdays if you want to see all the new stuff coming in,” says Natascha Dufour, “or on Tuesdays if you prefer to browse and have a quiet chat.”
Natascha Dufour opened Vintage Kafferiet (roughly translated as the The Vintage Coffe Shop) in January, 2010 and the shop was an instant success with residents and business people in the neighbourhood.

Vintage Kafferiet is like the apartment of your new best girl friend

Black is a Great Colour for Vintage Furniture
“I source most of my furniture from auctions in Sweden,” says Natascha Dufour.
“Then I paint and upholster it myself. The fashionable colour at the moment is black, which luckily looks amazing with the vintage furniture.”
She changes the interior every week, and consciously creates a homely atmosphere with candles an her favourite French chansons.
The furniture shifts quite quickly, and recently a sofa was carried out the door, while there were still guests sitting on it enjoying their coffee. Luckily the guests take this as part of the atmosphere. They just laugh and find somewhere else to sit.

Owner Natascha Dufour creates a cosy atmosphere with candles and personal finds at Vintage Kafferiet

Home-baked Cakes and Drinks with a Conscience
“The cakes are home-baked, says Natascha Dufour, “and I really take pride in serving good coffee.”
She also takes pride in serving other good products: The tea is from Sri Lanka, made by a company which gives back to the local community, and the cold pressed apple juices are from a small farm in southern Denmark.
Vintage Kafferiet is inspired by similar small shops in New York, and hopefully it will inspire you to a visit.
